About Me

richncouz

I’m Just a simple man tryin’ to serve the Lord, that’s the main thing you need to know. Jesus is my King, and making an impact on people’s lives for His sake is my passion; all the rest are afterthoughts.

Speaking about afterthoughts, I love a good grappling match, whether mentally or physically. On the mental side, I’m getting a Master’s degree in philosophy.

On the physical side, I wrestled competitively for 15 years, and now I coach it and compete in Jiu-jitsu on the side.

I used to compete in jump rope before I took up Jiu-jitsu (yes, jump rope is a sport).

Books are a must, as are good friends.

I bleed Scarlet and Grey.

In my spare time, I herd cats at a Southern California high school…)

You might be asking, “why the ‘Pugnacious Irishman’ name? It’s a name my roommate gave me when I first moved to California in 2003. I forget exactly how it came about, but it stuck.

This blog is my humble attempt at contending for the good, the true, and the beautiful in the market place of ideas. My goal? To make you think, that’s all. If you leave this blog with a thought that shakes you loose a bit, I’ve done my job.

If you  wish to contact me, you can email me at rdb268@hotmail.com, or just leave a comment on the blog.  Sometimes I respond.

Sounds redundant. But I guess the truth/facts are worth repeating.

  3. Hello, nice to know you….

what d’you mean by “market place of ideas”

    Thank you

  4. Hey Kalmekul!

Basically, that’s a phrase for the cacophony of worldviews out there vying for your assent. Whether its on TV talk shows, radio, movies, the newspaper, the quad at the university, or the high school classroom, ideas are being debated and discussed every day.

Wherever humans are, you’ll find ideas. Persuasion is all around you. There are lots of foolishness out there, and best to choose your beliefs wisely.

    Does that help?

  5. Hey Rich,
I started reading your blog yesterday…and already I’m impressed. Found you on Neil Simpson’s blogroll. He made a good choice. :-) I do have one question…does this blog seem to run excruciatingly slowly to you? It doesn’t work in Safari but seems to be okay in Explorer and Google Chrome. Just thought I’d ask since it was driving me nuts. Anyway, God’s best to you in your cat herding endeavor—I think Christian public school teachers, particularly those who reside in states somewhat…left of center, to put it nicely…will receive an especially large crown from Jesus at the bema for all your difficult work—and I mean that literally. Thanks for the insight and the humor. It’s drier than Ezekiel’s dry bones. :)

Rich, thank you for this. I find your apologetics to be incredibly strong.

  7. Good day, sir,
I would first like your opinion or assessment of the current state of the idea market. I have sadly come to the conclusion that society has made a jumbled mess of it, creating, as you described it, a cacophony. It seems we find ourselves in a system where people believe that, because they have the right to believe whatever they wish and hold no logical or scientific scrutiny to their own beliefs. We are distracted form these crucial questions regarding the very foundation of our lives. Society has distracted us, not by withholding information or restricting our worldview, but by encouraging over indulgence and decadence, thus sufficiently conditioning the populace that the material universe is primary, and one’s beliefs are personal and relative. Furthermore, when matters of belief arise, we are constantly distracted by the minutia, that we forget the thematic issues that are the true cause and therefore the true enemy.

    Your thoughts?
