I’m totally ok with having online friends that you (or I) have never met. That’s one of the advantages of the new media–stretching one’s influence.

My points, rather are two: 1) the new media, facebook included, has changed the way we view authenticity. We now have a cheap substitute for authenticity (represented by the 25 things meme, etc) that is reinforced by social networking sites, and we rarely stop to think and question our new definition. 2) It is very possible, like you alluded to, to have two different identities–a “real world” one and an online one. When that happens, its very easy for the latter to overtake the former. Plus, a lot of times, the latter identity is driven by the desire to get attention.

I have many friends online whom I’ve never met. And I’m very good with words, so I have a lot of control over their perception of me. I worry that one day I’ll meet them and they’ll be disappointed. But what can you do? Even if you try to be authentic you still have to choose what to say and what to conceal.
