This was a great post. We differ on our level of optimism and respect for the institution a bit, but really good work. I work in a fantastic public school system. We are efficient, proactive and successful for the most part, but even I become frustrated with some the very same issues you have discussed here.

I agree with you most on the moral vacuum and the size of the beast. Morality is tough when it shouldn't be. Morality and ethics does not have to be synonomous with religion or even spirtuatlity. Emphasis can be given on right and wrong without addressing a specific ethos. The problem is the damn country at large can't even agree on what is right and/or wrong!

You have two sides of the debate both going overboard about the wrong things. The unions (I am a union member btw) need to calm down a lot and in certain states/districts ease the tenure regulations and firing gauntlet. In additon detractors need to calm down, remove the end-all-be-all emphasis on standardized testing and quite pushing to corporatize everything.

Invest more, certainly more wisely, shrink school size, even if it means adding additional schools, and focus on the growth of the person, not the growth of the high-stakes test score!

Just happened across your blog, and I will definitely be back. Good stuff.
